Quality Assurance Plots (PDR3)

This page summarizes a set of useful astrometric, photometric, and PSF model shape tests.  We use stars with G<20 from Gaia for astrometry, and those 1.5mag or more brighter than the typical 5sigma limiting magnitudes of PS1 3pi survey in each filter for photometry and shape.  Most figures are self-explanatory, but they are explaioned in the first set of figures.

Astrometry

Mean Dec. offset from GaiaMean R.A. offset from Gaia
Astrometric offsets in the R.A. (right) and Dec. (left) directions. Gaia stars brighter than G=20 are matched with the HSC stars and the mean offset in each direction is estimated on a patch by patch basis. Recall a patch is a square region of 4k pixel on a side (11 arcmin). The amount of offset is color-coded as shown in the bottom-right panel. The gray rectangles show the tract borders and the numbers are tract IDs. The panels are for different filters as indicated in each panel.

Photometry

Mag difference from PS1Mag dispersionPSF-CModel for starsPSF-Kron for stars5sigma point-source depth
  • The first figure from the left is a comparison with PS1. We select common bright stars between HSC and PS1 (as mentioned above, we use stars 1.5mag or more brighter than the typical PS1 mag limits), and compare the HSC PSF photometry and PS1 photometry. As we use the PS1 catalog for cailbration, this is not an external check but is still useful. As in the astrometry plots, the difference is estimated for each patch separately and the amount of the difference is indicated as the color bar in the bottom-right panel. The different panels are for different filters. The median number shown in the figure is the median offset over the area shown.
  • The second figure is similar to the first figure, but we here show the dispersion between HSC and PS1 photometry using the same set of common stars.
  • The third figure is an internal comparison. We select bright stars from HSC and compare their PSF and CModel magnitudes. As CModel asymptorically approaches PSF, they should agree well, and the agreement is in fact good.
  • The fourth plot is similar to the third one, but this is for PSF - Kron. As the Kron photometry does not use the PSF model, this is a good diagnostic plot to validate the PSF model.
  • The last figure is the 5-sigma depth for point sources. We use the PSF photometry and its uncertainty as quoted by the pipeline, and it can be slightly optimistic.

Shape

PSF size residualSeeing
We measure the PSF sizes from the Gaussian-weighted 2nd moment (sdssshape). This is done for both observed PSF and model PSF constructed at the same position. The left figure shows the PSF size residual: FWHM_observed - FWHM_model in milli arcsec. The panels are organized in the same way as the previous plots. The right figure is the observed seeing sizes, which can be useful to grasp the quality of data in your field of interest.
